Configuration
Settings Overview
Configure Segra's recording, audio, video, and application settings
Segra provides comprehensive settings to customize your recording experience. Settings are organized into sections accessible from the Settings page.
Settings Location
Settings are stored in a JSON file at:
%AppData%\Segra\settings.jsonManually editing the settings file is not recommended. Use the Settings UI to ensure proper validation and formatting.
Settings Sections
Account
Manage your Segra account authentication and profile.
- JWT and refresh token storage
- Account linking and authentication
Recording
Configure how Segra captures your gameplay. The Recording section contains Capture Mode, Hotkeys, Video Settings, and Audio, in that order.
You can change Capture Mode, Video Settings, Audio, and Game Integrations settings while a recording is running. The current recording keeps the settings it started with, and your changes apply from the next recording. While changes are pending, Segra shows (applies to next recording) next to the affected section heading and a banner at the top of Settings.
Choose between Session, Buffer, or Hybrid recording modes
Resolution, framerate, encoder, and codec configuration
Configure keyboard shortcuts for bookmarks and replay buffer
Select input and output audio sources
Storage
Manage where recordings are saved and storage limits.
See Storage Settings for detailed information.
Games
Configure game detection and automatic event tracking.
- Auto-record Games (
autoRecordGames): Automatically start recording when a game launches. Defaults totrue. When disabled, Segra does not auto-start recordings. Games you've added with recording enabled still record, and manual recording still works.
See Game Integration for supported games.
Preferences
Customize the Segra interface and behavior. Preferences are grouped into App and Interface cards:
- Run on Startup: Launch Segra when Windows starts
- Close Button (
closeButtonAction): Radio buttons that control what happens when you press the window's close (X) button.Minimize(Minimize to Tray) hides Segra to the system tray so recording continues;Exit(Close App) quits the app. Defaults toMinimize. - Confirm Before Deleting (
confirmBeforeDeleting): When enabled, Segra shows a confirmation dialog before deleting a video, clip, highlight, custom-game executable, or recoverable file. Defaults tofalse(delete without confirmation). - Sound Effects Volume: Adjust notification sound levels (0.0-1.0)
- Show New Badge on Videos: Highlight recently recorded content
- Show Game Background: Display game artwork in UI
- Show Audio Waveform in Timeline: Visualize audio in the editor
Segra also remembers the main window's position and size between launches (lastWindowState, backend-managed; settings updates sent from the frontend cannot overwrite it). The persisted object includes x, y, width, height, and maximized. The state is saved a few seconds after you move, resize, or maximize the window, not only at close, so it survives a crash or force-kill. On the next launch Segra restores the last non-maximized bounds and re-maximizes the window if it was maximized at close. It re-opens on the monitor it was last closed on, and falls back to centering on the primary monitor if that monitor is no longer connected. To recover a lost or off-screen window, right-click the tray icon and choose Reset window size, which repositions the window and resets it to 1280×720 (DPI-scaled on Windows).
Advanced
Access advanced configuration options. Update options are grouped under an Updates heading, and online options under Online Features:
- OBS Version Selection (
selectedOBSVersion): Choose specific OBS version or use automatic (latest non-beta) - Update Channel (
receiveBetaUpdates): Dropdown —StableorBeta. When set toBeta, Segra opts into pre-release builds. If the version you're running is no longer published (for example, a release that was pulled), the updater moves you to the latest published release, even if that is a lower version. Stable-channel users running a beta are not downgraded. - Install updates automatically (
autoInstallUpdates): Checkbox in Advanced > Updates. When enabled, Segra installs downloaded updates on its own once nothing is recording and the main window is closed. Defaults totrue. Windows only (the Linux Flatpak build hides this setting).
Separate Audio Tracks and What to Record (audioOutputMode) live in the Audio card under Recording. See Audio.
AI & Highlights
- Enable Highlights (
enableAi): Enable automatic highlight generation features - Auto-Generate Highlights (
autoGenerateHighlights): Automatically create highlight reels from sessions that contain highlight-worthy bookmarks - Highlight Padding Before (
highlightPaddingBefore): Seconds of context kept before each highlight bookmark (default4, range 1–60) - Highlight Padding After (
highlightPaddingAfter): Seconds of context kept after each highlight bookmark (default4, range 1–60)
Menu & Navigation
- Menu Items (
menuItems): Toggle visibility for sidebar entries. Known IDs:Full Sessions,Replay Buffer,Clips,Highlights,Settings(theSettingsentry is always visible). - Default Menu Item (
defaultMenuItem): The screen Segra opens on launch. Defaults toFull Sessions.
Capture Mode
Segra offers three recording modes:
Records each game from launch to close as one video. Uses disk space. Best for:
- Full match recordings
- Review and analysis
- Creating montages from entire sessions
Files are saved automatically when the game closes.
Keeps the last N seconds of gameplay in memory so you can save it as a clip. Uses RAM. Best for:
- Capturing unexpected moments
- Saving only the highlights
- Minimal disk space usage
Press the "Save Replay Buffer" hotkey to save the buffer to disk.
Records each game as one video and lets you save the last N seconds as a clip. Uses RAM and disk space. Best for:
- Maximum flexibility
- Not missing any content
- Quick highlight saving during live gameplay
You get both the full session recording and the ability to save instant replays.
Replay Buffer Settings
When using Buffer or Hybrid mode, configure:
Duration in seconds to keep in memory (5-600 seconds, set via the Buffer Duration input)
Maximum buffer size in MB (100-5000, set via the Max Size input)
Always-on Replay Buffer checkbox in Capture Mode. Keeps a replay buffer of your display running whenever no game or manual recording is active. See Always-on replay buffer.
You can change buffer settings while recording. The running recording keeps its original values, and the new values apply from the next recording.
Audio
Segra supports multiple audio inputs and outputs simultaneously. Configure them in Settings > Recording > Audio.
Selecting Devices
- Input Devices (Microphones): Click the dropdown and select one or more microphone sources
- Output Devices (Desktop Audio): Select which audio outputs to capture
- Volume Control: Adjust individual device volumes (0.0-1.0)
Default Device
The "Default Device" option dynamically tracks your system's default audio device. If you change your default microphone or speakers in Windows, Segra will automatically use the new default.
Per-device input options
Each selected input device has its own Noise Suppression and Mono toggle buttons next to its volume slider.
Apply noise suppression to this input device. New input devices start with noise suppression on.
Force this input device to mono. Useful for USB mics that report as stereo but only use one channel.
Earlier versions used the global inputNoiseSuppression and forceMonoInputSources settings. On upgrade, Segra copies those values onto every selected input device and removes the global keys.
Advanced audio options
Separate Audio Tracks checkbox. Record each audio source to a separate track. Track 1 is always the full mix and the remaining tracks map to the selected sources (inputs first, then outputs). The effective cap is probed from the loaded OBS build: 6 with stock OBS, higher with Segra's bundled OBS. Enables per-source volume control during editing.
Parallel to audioTrackNames. Each entry classifies the track as "mix", "input" (microphone), or "output" (system/game audio). Segra uses this list to render the microphone, headphones, or waveform icon next to each track in the video editor's segment cards. Managed automatically alongside audioTrackNames; recordings without this field still work.
Set with the What to Record options. Controls which applications are recorded:
All(Everything): All system audioGameOnly(Game Only): Only the detected gameGameAndDiscord(Game and Voice Chat): Game + voice chat (Discord, Discord Canary, Discord PTB, TeamSpeak, TeamSpeak 3; filters other apps)
Display Selection
For multi-monitor setups:
Choose which monitor to record:
Automatic: Records the monitor where the game appears- Specific display: Always record from selected monitor
On Linux Wayland sessions, this field is replaced by a Screen field because the desktop's screen-share dialog picks the captured screen. Segra remembers your choice (pipeWireRestoreToken). Click Change screen to clear it so the next manual recording or replay buffer asks again.
Record in HDR when the source display is in HDR mode. This keeps HDR brightness and color, but videos can look washed out on screens without HDR. When disabled (or when no HEVC/AV1 encoder that supports HDR is available), Segra tone-maps HDR output to SDR instead of recording it washed out. Segra also detects games that output SDR on an HDR display and records them as SDR.
Session Management
Automatically delete session recordings that have no bookmarks. Useful for automatically cleaning up uneventful gameplay.
Hidden Settings
Some settings have no UI toggle and are only editable by hand in settings.json.
Target sizes (in MB) offered by the video page's Copy button dropdown ("Copy as compressed file"). Segra sorts entries ascending and only shows entries smaller than the source file. Set to [] to hide the compressed-copy menu. The 20 MB default matches Discord's current non-Nitro upload limit; users still on the previous [10, 50, 100, 500] default are migrated on upgrade, while customized lists are left alone.

Performance Optimization
- Use GPU encoder when available for better performance
- Select resolution at or below your monitor's native resolution
- For older systems, use 720p/30fps or Standard preset
- Close unnecessary applications before recording
Quality vs File Size
- VBR provides better quality-to-size ratio than CBR
- CRF/CQP offers best quality for archival recordings
- Lower CRF/CQ values = higher quality and larger files
- Standard preset balances quality and performance for most users
Audio Configuration
- Test audio levels before important recording sessions
- Use separate audio tracks if you plan to edit recordings
- Enable "GameOnly" mode to avoid capturing music/browser audio
- Adjust individual device volumes to balance game and voice
