Configuration
Hotkeys
Configure keyboard shortcuts for bookmarks and replay buffer in Segra
Hotkeys allow you to control Segra during gameplay without switching windows. Configure global keyboard shortcuts to mark important moments and save replays.
Segra registers hotkeys as OBS hotkeys through ObsKit.NET rather than a private low-level keyboard hook. Because of this, hotkeys are only active once OBS has finished initializing (a few seconds after launch) and are automatically re-registered whenever you change them in Settings > Recording > Hotkeys. Each combination supports at most one non-modifier key plus any of Ctrl / Alt / Shift / Win.
Elevated (Admin) Games and the Hotkey Broker
Windows blocks a non-elevated process (Segra) from reading input while a process running as administrator (many anti-cheat–protected games) is focused. To keep hotkeys working in that case, Segra ships a small companion service called the Hotkey Broker.
- The broker runs as a Windows service at Local System with a signed executable. Segra prompts you to install it the first time it detects an elevated game and remembers your choice per broker version (
hotkeyBrokerDeclinedVersioninsettings.json). - Once installed, Segra connects to the broker over a local named pipe and forwards hotkey presses that occur while an elevated game is focused. All hotkey UI, storage, and behavior stay the same.
- A Hotkey Broker Warning appears in Settings if the broker is missing, out of date, or failed to start. Follow the prompt to reinstall or repair it.
- If you decline the install, hotkeys still work everywhere except while an elevated game is focused.
Global hotkeys on Linux Wayland
On Wayland sessions, Segra reads hotkeys directly from your keyboards in /dev/input, so they work no matter which window is focused. Key positions follow your keyboard layout as reported by XWayland.
Reading /dev/input requires your user to be in the input group. Without it, Segra falls back to XWayland, and hotkeys only work while an X11 window (for example, a Wine or Proton game) is focused. Settings then shows a warning with the command to fix it:
sudo usermod -aG input $USERLog out and back in after running the command. On X11 sessions, hotkeys work in every window without extra setup.
Available Actions
Segra supports four hotkey actions:
Mark important moments during recording for easy navigation later
Manually start or stop a recording session
Save the current replay buffer to disk (Buffer or Hybrid mode, or while the always-on replay buffer is running)
Toggle the recording preview window
Default hotkeys
Creates a bookmark at the current timestamp in your recording. Bookmarks appear in the timeline and can be used to quickly jump to key moments.
Default: F8
Starts a manual recording, or stops the active recording.
Default: F9
Saves the replay buffer to disk as a video file. Works while a Buffer or Hybrid recording is running, or while the always-on replay buffer is running.
Default: F10
Shows or hides the recording preview window.
Default: F11
Configuring hotkeys
From the Settings UI
- Navigate to Settings > Recording section
- Find the Hotkeys section, directly below Capture Mode
- Click the key display button next to the action you want to change
- Press the desired key combination
- The hotkey updates automatically
Click the hotkey button (e.g., "F8") next to the action
The button will show "Press Keys..." - press your desired combination
Release the keys to save the new hotkey
Press Esc while capturing to cancel and keep the existing binding
Global hotkeys are paused while Segra captures a new binding, so pressing an existing combination doesn't trigger its action.
Supported Key Combinations
You can bind:
- Single keys:
F8,F10,K, etc. - Modifier + Key:
Ctrl+K,Alt+R,Shift+B - Multiple modifiers:
Ctrl+Shift+K,Ctrl+Alt+F1
Function keys (F1-F12) are recommended for gaming as they don't conflict with in-game controls.
Supported Keys
Function Keys
- F1 through F24
Modifier Keys
Ctrl(Control)Alt(Alternate)ShiftWin(Windows key)
Special Keys
- Arrow keys (←, ↑, →, ↓)
Space,Enter,Tab,EscHome,End,PgUp,PgDnInsert,Delete,BackspaceNum Lock
Alphanumeric
- Letters: A-Z
- Numbers: 0-9
Symbols
;,=,,,-,.,/,`,[,\,],'
Enabling and disabling hotkeys
Each hotkey can be temporarily disabled without removing it:
- Navigate to Settings > Recording > Hotkeys
- Click the checkbox next to the action
- Unchecked hotkeys remain configured but won't trigger
Disable hotkeys during non-gaming activities to prevent accidental triggers.
Hotkey settings JSON
Hotkeys are stored in settings.json under the keybindings key. The key name is unchanged from earlier versions, so existing settings files keep working:
"keybindings": [
{
"action": "CreateBookmark",
"enabled": true,
"keys": [119]
},
{
"action": "ToggleRecording",
"enabled": true,

{
"action": "SaveReplayBuffer",

Whether the hotkey is active
Array of key codes. For combinations, includes modifier codes first (16=Shift, 17=Ctrl, 18=Alt), then the main key code.
Example: [17, 75] = Ctrl+K (17=Ctrl, 75=K)
Common Key Codes
Use Cases
When to use:
- Mark kills, deaths, or important plays
- Flag moments to review later
- Create chapter markers for long sessions
- Highlight areas for clip creation
Example workflow:
- Press F8 when you get a triple kill
- After the session, open the recording
- Jump between bookmarks to find highlights
- Create clips from bookmarked moments
When to use:
- Capture unexpected moments in Buffer mode
- Save the last 30 seconds of gameplay
- Conserve disk space by only saving highlights
Example workflow:
- Set recording mode to Buffer (30 seconds)
- Play normally - last 30s stays in memory
- Something amazing happens - press F10
- The last 30 seconds are saved to disk
Only works in Buffer or Hybrid mode, or while the always-on replay buffer is running. Has no effect during a Session-mode recording.
Troubleshooting
Hotkey not working
Possible causes:
- Hotkey is disabled (check the checkbox)
- Game runs as administrator and the Hotkey Broker isn't installed (install it from the Settings prompt or the Hotkey Broker Warning card)
- Key combination conflicts with in-game binding
- Segra service is not running
Solutions:
- Verify the hotkey is enabled
- Check Segra's system tray icon is present
- Install the Hotkey Broker if the warning is showing in Settings
- Try a different key combination
- Restart Segra
Wrong action triggered
If pressing a key triggers the wrong action:
- Check for overlapping hotkeys. When two actions use the same key combination, Segra runs both
- Reconfigure the conflicting hotkey
Can't capture certain key combinations
Some key combinations may be reserved by:
- Windows (e.g.,
Win+Llocks the PC) - Your keyboard driver software
- Other running applications
Use function keys or less common combinations to avoid conflicts.
Best Practices
F-keys rarely conflict with games and are easy to reach
Use the same keys across different games for muscle memory
Verify hotkeys work before important sessions
Keep a note of your hotkeys if you use custom combinations
